Expectations

Pre-marital counselling (premarriage counselling), is designed to bring an understanding of the kinds of issues newly married or committed couples will face in the early years of their union and offers ways of improving skills to better negotiate those issues and transitions.

Make your relationship last

Our experience of living with our families or group housing or sharing with an intimate partner can be significantly challenged once the paper is signed on the marriage certificate or mortgage.

By facing these concerns before they are met couples can ensure they are well prepared. The experience felt in early stages of any relationship (limmerance) rarely extend beyond the first year or so.

Couples moving to a more substantial relationship sometimes find they struggle to retain their independence while at the same time becoming a member of the new group... family dynamics change every time something is added or taken away.

In order to be loved or liked all of us do things to make the other person happy. Problems arise when we are not primarily making ourselves happy. Pre-marital (or pre-relationship) counselling helps people discover the real reasons why they want to be together.

Becoming aware, being mindful and being alert to issues allows early resolution and establishes a pattern that can last the entire relationship. Long lasting relationships often rely on openness between partners... this is a critical ingredient of a successful relationship.

  • Establish clearly what each of you value in relationships and in yourself
  • Are you aware of your partner's core values? Do they match your values?
  • Can you live with the differences?
  • How to move from expectancies and assumptions to realistic ideals
  • Develop relationship skills to enhance the intimacy of your marriage
  • Learning to recognise your feelings, both good and bad and use them to enjoy your relationship
  • Establishing boundaries to let each other know your real needs and desires
  • Learn how personality and communication styles can effect your partnership
  • What happens when a successful de-facto relationship flounders after marriage
