Procrastination - what does it cost you?Click for Mobile Accessible Site

If you are a chronic procrastinator you can change your behaviour. It may not be easy but it is well worth considering as it can lead to a much better life.

Procrastination leads to long term health issues. Insomnia, stomach problems, compromised immune system, cols and other respiratory conditions. Also, your friends and family are affected. Decisions you eventually make may be compromised.

Procrastinator types

Of course you may be the procrastinator who gets a thrill from waiting until the last minute to get the job done. The adrenalin starts flowing in those last few hours and the thrill is such that you encourage the situation.

However the cost is enormous because a lot of energy goes into creating and experiencing this thrill.

The avoider-procrastinator has other issues and may be overly concerned about how other people perceive them... preferring that other people consider they are lazy rather than are unable to complete a task.

The procrastinator who avoids decisions may be avoiding responsibility for a possible bad decision they make.

Lies

Procrastinators are often lying to themselves in order to avoid or deny responsibility.

  • It doesn't really matter
  • I can do it tomorrow
  • I work best under pressure
  • I am more creative with this stress

Distractions

Another great procrastinator behaviour is to find distractions. when I am meant to be doing the writing I promise i will do you may find me cleaning the house. The vacuum cleaner is my favourite distracting tool. This is a way of controlling my environment and allowing me to control my fears of being a bad writer.

Self regulation

Procrastinators have issues with regulating their feelings and consequently their behaviours. the art of self=soothing and the act of setting yourself targets and goals can go a long way toward changing a procrastinator's behaviour. This is not a simple issue and can take some time to nudge yourself into a way of thinking and living that ultimately will allow you to fully realise your potential and live an extraordinary life.

Of course.. I'll probably do that tomorrow. I always work better after thinking about it for a while.
